Cresswell in a back 3....
Looking like a very clever move from Moyes to push Cresswell in to a back 3. I like to say how simple football is, but credit where due - i'd never have seriously considered Cresswelll at centre half.

He gives a very nice balance to the formation and also allows us to change formation if necessary with no problems at all.

Re: Cresswell in a back 3....
I disagree, it's the best way of having him and Masuaku both covering the left but only because they're both a bit short in quality to do it alone.

Agree it gets the best out of them both and works for us as a whole but if one of these two is OUT injured or suspended the whole shape of the team will be disrupted.

Re: Cresswell in a back 3....
"Looking like a very clever move" - only because of how much Cresswell has lost as an attacking force.

I'd much rather someone found a way to bring back that.

What gank said.... not exactly rocket science

Re: Cresswell in a back 3....
What Gank said...this new role requires a less talented footballer, all he has to basically do now is hold his position and do what he's paid a fortune for...defend! No longer has to go forward sling (shit) crosses in and then get back etc..it's not a coincidence that he suddenly looks better, it's an easier role.

You've never played football, have you PD. What an utterly ridiculous statement.

Re: Cresswell in a back 3....
Thanks for you opinion, and yes I have played football, so you can put that 'utterly ridiculous' cliche away that seems to get rolled out on here a lot.

Put up your own input you fucking mug.

Re: Cresswell in a back 3....
You think that it's just a weird coincidence that he looks a better player now he's changed positions?? To be a successful modern day full back in the PL today you have to be a very good player, better than Cresswell is.

Similar to what stuart pearce did later in his career.

Re: Cresswell in a back 3....
Putting to one side the fact it might be an easier role (I’m not sure it is) and that’s why he’s performance has picked up I think the point is that it was a good move for Moyes to put him in a back 3. Every week we have a thread for teams and almost everyone who puts a back 3 would go with 3 recognised centre backs so ogbonna, Reid, fonte or ogbonna, Reid, Collins. Hardly ever did people put creswell in the 3. This is how Chelsea do it with aspilicueta

Re: Cresswell in a back 3....
The experts on here give me a chuckle. The back three looked as good is it has for a while against sides that have made a lot of quality dedicated centre-halfs look silly. But apparently its a easy position to play.

Sometimes its not about talent, sometimes its about playing a team sport. Its about being disciplined enough to play a role and do your best in that role in order to pick up points.

Cresswell did that very well. Hopefully we can learn to calm down in possession and he can help with passing out of the back as well. If we choose to keep him there.

Very surprised with how well Cresswell has done there. Hopefully he keeps it up

Re: Cresswell in a back 3....
It's quite clever as it gives us the flexibility to become a back 4 very easily by pushing Masuaku into midfield and Cresswell to a conventional left back position.

Trouble is that he's a full back playing out of position and he will get found out sooner or later at some point.

Re: Cresswell in a back 3....
It's not a traditional back 3 though in that he stays central all game.

When we have the ball Arthur pushes on and Cresswell goes to left back, but when we are defending Cresswell comes inside and Arthur drops back to pick up the wide man.

People say the system won't work if one of the two get injured but you could just swap it to the right side with Zabaleta and Byram or Antonio.

Re: Cresswell in a back 3....
Back on your heads! Another dismal display by Cresswell. Caused the first goal with a stupid cross field ball. To see him in the corner with Masuaku and both Newcastle defenders standing on both of their left feet and neither could cross the ball as they only use their right feet for standing on. In this day and age to have one footed players is as disgrace. Cresswell has no idea about drawing a player before he passes the ball, her just seems to want to get rid of it as soon as he can. He took nearly every free kick and corner and fucked every one of them up. Get rid in January

That cross filed ball was a shocker, and ultimately cost us a goal. I put that down as a goal we should never have conceded, because that pass never needed to be made.

Back to the bad old days.

Never been the same since that injury in pre-season 2016. Criminally one-footed. Time to go.

Re: Cresswell in a back 3....
Never ever seen him defend, considering he is supposed to be a defender. Has been excellent going forward with crosses and a few shots/goals in seasons past long gone, notably when Payet used to dink the ball down the wing on the outside which he used to run onto. Payet used to d all the hard work teeing him up, went to shit when Payet left.

Re: Cresswell in a back 3....
Yep huge credit to Moyes and his staff for finding a position for Cresswell that none of us would have predicted. I suppose the only question mark is whether opposition sides might find a way to exploit his lack of height.

Where I think the club have missed a trick with Cresswell is that he was probably worth £25m+ in the market 18 months ago. Now he's worth... well nowhere near as much I'd guess. The time to sell him has passed really, we're stuck with a declining player into his 30s again. It's another sign of an unambitious treading-water policy.

Re: Cresswell in a back 3....
I don't really like it or him in the side. Decent squad player but he wouldn't get a look in if Fonte was fit. Masuaku is a better left back too.
